The following is the most appropriate definition of Applied Sport Psychology I have seen to date,

AAASP definition

"Applied sport psychology involves extending theory and research into the field to educate coaches, athletes, and parents with the goals of facilitating optimal sport involvement and performance. The practice of applied sport psychology usually involves a combination of individual and group consulting or counselling depending on the style of the professional conducting the intervention and the needs of the client."

can Sport Psychology help you?

I am assuming (rightly or wrongly) that because you are reading this you have an interest in the psychological part of your performance or the performance of someone you know.

Applied Sport Psychology can only help you if you are willing to work on the psychological aspects of your sport to improve performance.

So... if you answer 'yes!' to any of the following questions, Applied Sport Psychology can help you:

  • Do you find it a challenge to focus during competitions?
  • Do you lack confidence when it really matters?
  • Do you find it hard to control your nerves before a big game?
  • Do you choke in important events?
  • Do you find it a challenge to maintain your motivation during the off-season?
  • Are you looking for that last piece of the puzzle?
